Counsellor Troi reporting for duty

Due to requirement to attend an 80's theme party I thought long and hard about what I wanted to wear, eventually settling on the teal dress that Counsellor Troi wears in Star Trek Next Generation.

Trip to Spotlight and I had the jersey fabric required and a suitable pattern. Naturally this dress wasn't exactly the same so I had to cut longer sleeves.

The dress itself was easy peasy however I have never tackled sleeves before so I ran them through the machine a few times until the fit was correct around my arms. This was made much easier by the fact that jersey stretches and I had remembered to cut it so that it stretched around my arm! Gold star for me! The dress is also much shorter than the pattern so I lopped a huge chunk off the bottom then added a slit.

Next step was tights... OK! Let's say I am glad no one was really gettting more than a glimpse of the tights through the slit! The waist band was way lower than I would have liked and there were a couple of slightly bulgy bits that I couldn't be bothered going back to fix.

I needed a headband for this costume so found a cheapy and covered it with the same fabric then stuck some green gems on it to create the same type of look.

Here is the finished product!

Sayonara

You would not believe how much fabric I have! I am a hoarder of pretty material and it's time to sort it out. I have pulled out a few nearly finished pieces to get done and I am also planning how I can use up some of the rest of the fabric.

Despite the fact that I tend to prefer to buy tops when I go shopping my sewing tastes appear to be more about bottoms. Skirts are my BIG thing right now. Not just because they are easy but because my wardrobe has a lack of them.

Why the title of this post? I have an idea which I am part way through to make a sort of japanese influenced wrap made in heavy red satin. This has been a learning curve for me. It is the first time I have tried pattern making. I'll be honest and tell you it isn't working out quite as I imagined but it will definately be different!

Luckily for me I had this material in my stash so I haven't had to spend more money.

Under the apple tree

Isn't this material divine! I found it in the quilting section. There seems to be much more interesting fabrics in this area and it's giving me some good ideas. I'm going to turn this into a skirt with a red waist band and edging.

Geek girl

Welcome! Rather than bore everyone with numerous posts on Facebook I am presenting my creations here.

I've just finished this pleated tarten skirt for a costume. I'm going to a fancy dress party as the gorgeous Abby from NCIS and rather than hunt the shops I dug out my sewing machine and whipped up this little number.

It turned out a bit shorter than intended when my scissors got the better of me and I cut on an angle but with fishnets underneath I'm happy.

I liked the pattern so much I'm now making another skirt in black cotton but I will leave this one longer so it's work safe. :-)
